Performing Arts at our school, led by the highly experienced local theatre actor and director Sharren Read, is a vibrant discipline within the New Zealand Curriculum that empowers students to express their identity and creativity through movement, voice, and presence. Following the four curriculum strands—Understanding the Arts in Context, Developing Practical Knowledge, Developing Ideas, and Communicating and Interpreting—Sharren guides students as they explore the transformative power of drama and performance. The programme balances technical stagecraft with the confidence-building "soft skills" of collaboration and empathy, encouraging students to experiment with different techniques to tell compelling stories. Drawing on her professional industry background, Sharren fosters a professional and supportive environment where students learn to critique work, refine their performances, and engage deeply with Aotearoa’s unique bicultural heritage and the wider world of theatre.
