Devon Intermediate School opened in February 1958 to meet the needs of families in the western sector of New Plymouth.
The school site has a rich history that dates back to pre-European times, when it formed part of a traditional Māori pathway to Ngāmotu. In 1840, a cottage was built on the land by a pioneer settler who had drawn the property in a ballot. Over time, several more houses were established before the land became a nursery in 1882. When the nursery closed in 1914, the area gradually reverted to bush, scrub, and swamp.
Today, Devon Intermediate is set in attractive, park-like surroundings with extensive playing fields, a large swimming pool, a hall, technology facilities, and a modern library. Classrooms are part of an ongoing programme of modernisation, supported by a comprehensive landscaping plan that enhances the learning environment. A key focus of current property development is the upgrading of the administration block.
From the school’s earliest days, its first principal, Mr A. L. Herdman, promoted a strong ethic of hard work and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of school life. These values have been upheld by successive principals and remain central to the philosophy of Devon Intermediate today.
Devon Intermediate has long been recognised for its positive school tone and strong sense of spirit. This has been built through the dedication of past teachers who gave generously of their time and effort, both inside and beyond the classroom. The current staff continues this tradition, encouraging students to live by the school motto: Diligence, Integrity and Service.
