Hard Materials at our school, guided by Jakib Murfitt, is a hands-on discipline within the New Zealand Curriculum’s Technology learning area that empowers students to bring their ideas to life using wood, metal, and plastics. Under Jakib’s expert instruction, students engage with the Technological Practice and Technological Knowledge strands, learning to follow a brief from initial conceptual design through to the final construction of a "fit-for-purpose" product. The workshop environment focuses on mastering specialised tools and machinery while prioritising health and safety, encouraging students to develop the grit and craftsmanship required for high-quality outcomes. Jakib emphasises the "minds-on" side of making, teaching students to evaluate material properties and sustainability, ensuring they leave the classroom as capable, resourceful problem-solvers ready for trade pathways or creative industries.
