AIMS
To provide workshop experiences that enrich pupils growth and development and encourage them to be imaginative, competent and comfortable with new technology, enabling them to solve everyday problems.
To develop pupil’s technological knowledge, understanding and awareness of the relationship between technology and society.
OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Become involved in satisfying and enjoyable experiences.
2. Explore basic principals of design and solve practical problems through the design process.
3. Develop their ability to communicate using graphic and verbal forms.
4. Practice and develop skills of craftsmanship on a range of materials.
5. Acquire experience in the correct choice, use and maintenance of tools and equipment,
6. Acquire safe workshop habits and develop a safety conscience.
7. Develop knowledge of tools, materials, processes and systems.
8. Develop their understanding of the influence of materials technology on the environment and people’s lives.
9. Develop attitudes of co-operation and concern for others and the environment.
10. Develop resourcefulness, perseverance, patience and pride in an honest effort.
TYPICAL PROGRESSION OF A UNIT OF WORK
1. The situation is set where the problem is identified.
2. The “brief” is established explaining what is required and the resources available.
3. Investigate and find a solution.
4. Design and/or make a prototype, evaluate and modify.
5. Learn appropriate skills and understanding of materials and/or technology.
6. Make final solution.
7. Presentation.
8. Evaluate.
